Soomaa National Park was formed to protect the biggest Estonian mires, valley forests and flooded meadows as well as to preserve and introduce the typical inherited culture. The area of the national park is 370 sq km. Two thirds of the protected area is located in Viljandimaa, one third in Pärnumaa. The core of the national park is formed by the mires Kuresoo, Kikepera and Valgeraba and they are separated from each other by the rivers of Navesti, Halliste, Raudna ja Lemmjõgi.
